In group sports, teammates call it, "earning your colors". Players don't just get their jersey because they want it- it has to be earned. In ballroom dancing, I call this "earning your gown". This ritual is preceded by long hours in practice skirts, yoga pants, and sports bras. But then the day finally comes - "Emma, I think you should start looking for a dress".... WHOO!! Your mind starts racing with colors, crystals, and what size cups you actually are, since you haven't worn a real bra in some time. The next few hours (or days... no judgement) are spent on the computer finding the perfect dress until it hits you. It absolutely does not matter what you wear. Your favorite dancers are not the ones with the most beautiful dresses, although let's be honest, they are pretty awesome. What matters is the technique, skill, and demeanor of these athletes. We admire their drive and excellence. All in all, we don't really care if FC Barcelona changes the colors of their kit, we care about how Messi defeated Real Madrid FC, again! So ladies and gentleman, while your tails and gowns may make you feel wonderful, just remember that your stripes are earned, and that your success is based on how hard you are willing to
work for it.
